how good are you at predicting the future? there are some among us who are especially apt at premonition. without the gift of sight, the rest of us are left to our own devices. there’s the man-made tool of visualization. of imagining the future before it happens. over and over and over again until it sticks so deeply in our subconscious, serendipity begins to take over.
one needs a certain sense of urgency to capitalize on serendipity. the feeling that if you do not move quickly, the moment will indeed past. and you know what the say about repeating a moment…you don’t. if you lose a moment, it’s not the end of the world. but it is the end of that moment.
moments exist in the in-between. that soft space between where you were and where you are going. by losing a moment, you lose one path to where you are going. lucky for you, there’s many ways to skin a cat. in losing a moment, another one will shortly appear. in a week, three months, or four years. the moment will come again. but this time, you must be ready. lest you lose the moment again and the cycle continues.
on her journey, the heroine is bound to repeat a cycle until she learns the lessons needed to ascend to her next level. the gamification of life has long been understood by certain agent provocateurs and long-dead alchemists. levels are won by seizing moments. momentum is increased with each seized moment. the future, the one you are so boldly visualizing, is created off the back of momentum. this is how one creates one’s future.
creating is not the same as predicting. predictions happen on the front end, creation on the back. when you predict, you assume a series of outcomes will unfold one by one, leading you to an inevitable end. the gurus have declared 2024 the beginning of the personal brands arms race. their theory goes that if each and every one of us has a personal brand, there are certain decisions that, if made, seem off-brand. there is no greater sin in the 21st century’s social media surveillance state then being off-brand. however, this is dogmatic thinking that does not help us predict, or even create our future.
as there are certain inevitabilities in life, there always remains the possibility that we will change from who we are now to who we will become when we are becoming. thus, the decisions we make that feel the most authentic—”on brand”—will change as we change. if change remains inevitable, so, too, should our perception of what our brand “is”, or what even is “on brand” for us.
we, few but proud, diouana women understand that the way we exist today is not necessarily the way we will exist tomorrow, or even the following day. thus, embracing change is what diouana women do best. we are adept at examining the moment in front of us and making a decision based on gut feelings only. we trust ourselves because we understand that there are no right decisions, only decisions made right.
if you do think of yourself in the context of a brand, know that no decision will ever be “off-brand” because you are who you are. if you weren’t, you would not be who you are. in this way, you can trust that you are creating your future in every moment you are in. after all, it’s the moments that lead to momentum and momentum that props up our future.
do not be afraid of change. know that it’s inevitable, just like the future you can’t stop envisioning for yourself.
sweet dreams,
a diouana woman
p.s. truth or dare
i am beginning a new section in my nightly posts titled truth or dare. it’s a simple curated list of ideas and items i’ve engaged with today that i loved and am sharing with you. the truths were 10/10, so i must recommend. and the dares were not so great, so it’s me saying don’t do it. but only if you dare. get it? great. let’s begin:
truth: cave-like wine bars.
truth: telling your boyfriend you love him.
dare: rich jerks.
